The Albuquerque Journal sent each candidate a questionnaire on the issues of greatest concern to voters. The following are unedited and unabridged responses from Albuquerque Mayoral candidates Tim Keller (the incumbent), Manny Gonzales, and Eddy Aragon to The Journal’s questions.

Tim Keller: Recruiting officers is a challenge everywhere — and an aging police force means more retirements. To retain officers, we must pay competitively, offer lateral bonuses while being clear about DOJ oversight, reduce officer caseload by changing our mental and behavioral health approach, and partner with Central New Mexico Community College/Albuquerque Public Schools to recruit homegrown talent.
Under what circumstances, if any, would you support raising taxes?
Tim Keller: I see no budget issues on the horizon because of our team’s thoughtful fiscal stewardship. I prefer going to the voters first for tax increases, but if there is an emergency, all options should be on the table. I’ll continue working with the Council to better prioritize city spending.

Manny Gonzales: I will enable and support APD leadership to fight crime. I will share my success as a law enforcement leader of an agency with 100% staffing levels. I will tirelessly serve the people of Albuquerque and support police officers so they are enabled to do their job.
Under what circumstances, if any, would you support raising taxes?
Manny Gonzales: I would only support raising taxes through voter approved elections.

Eddy Aragon: 1. Stop blaming “national trend.”
2. 90+ APD officers have left.
3. Officers buying out to retire because they aren’t supported.
4. No settlement policy with legal claims from criminals.
5. Spread overtime pool across all officers. $20k to each officer Day 1. We can’t grow if we can’t retain.
Under what circumstances, if any, would you support raising taxes?
Eddy Aragon: 1. Under no circumstances.
2. Not for a stadium.
3. Not for a bus.
4. Not for a spaceship.
5. Not for a building.
